More than a donut hole....

So 20 miles today. This still sounds long to me which isn't the mind set I need to be in. We set out about 5am from the "mother ship." After numerous gels we thought at mile 14 that we would try a couple donut holes. We have read that in an ultra you can't just rely on sports drinks and gels so you better get used to some real food. Real food obviously= donut holes.

So we literally run into the Donut Bank on Lincoln and Hwy 41 and scope out our choices. If I had a quarter for how many people said "that kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it" or "you better run further now." It was fun to watch their reaction when we told them why we weren't too concerned about it!

We are getting ready to pay and the cashier asks, " Are you training for the half?" When we told her what we were doing surprisingly she didn't give us the "have you considered in patient therapy instead?" look. Alicia was her name. She said, "oh, I ran Chicago back in the day and then qualified for Boston and ran it. I ran a 3:18!!!!" She then told us she was 45 at the time! Shout out to Alicia you ROCK girl!

Amazing would not describe the taste of the donut holes at that moment. I am sure I looked ridiculous to those just enjoying their morning coffee and donuts. I basically inhaled them while saying "Wow, these are amazing. Aren't these awesome? Oh my gosh these are good!" Mind you I was shoving them standing up, straight out of the bag, and dripping in sweat. I am sure it was so appetizing to watch!

As usual there was humor on the run. Elissa was looking down at her watch trying to slow down our pace (we are bad at sticking to the slow long run rule). And out of nowhere a semi trailer truck jumped out at her. Now, let's just totally set up this visual. It was a parked trailer. There was no truck or bed attached. It was NOT moving. Couldn't have moved. Just sitting there parked. She looked up, screamed and threw her arms up. It was like the trailer was attacking her. I hit the ground laughing. I shouldn't make fun of her because I am known for tripping over the ground,,,,but her flailing arms and squeal may have topped it!

So we finished, as usual, Elissa looking like she just finished walking the dog and me walking like I got off a horse. I am not sure what they put in her coffee but I think it is similar to kryptonite. I would love to say that we have peaked at our long run but we have only just begun. Excuse me while I go throw up now thinking about it!

See you next week Alicia
