100 miles for Christy - www.100forchristy.org

On August 21, 2010 Jay Donosky will be running the Leadville 100.....

Christy's Story
Christy Rolley was injured January 30, 2010 while sledding on the city’s west side. Christy was with her four children, William, Ellen, Isaac, and Sam as well as with her sister, Cathy, and her two children, Jacob and Emma. In the late afternoon, Christy and her niece Emma struck a tree while sledding on an inner tube. While Emma was fortunately uninjured, Christy struck her head and back on the tree. She was transported to Deaconess Hospital where an MRI revealed Christy had fractured her T8 & T9 vertebrae and sustained a spinal cord injury. Tragically, this resulted in paralysis below her sternum.

Christy spent the months of February, March and April rehabilitating at The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. The Shepherd Center is a private, not-for-profit, 132-bed hospital that specializes in the medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injury.

Christy is now home and continues to make progress. As you can imagine, the Rolleys continue to endure a great deal of challenges. The family is very grateful for the spiritual, social, and financial support from family, friends, and strangers.

The expected financial burden following spinal cord injuries is listed below:
» Initial hospitalization costs following injury: $140,000
» Average first year expenses for a SCI injury (all groups): $198,000
» First year expenses for paraplegics: $152,000
» First year expenses for quadriplegics: $417,000
» Average lifetime costs for paraplegics, age of injury 25: $428,000
» Average lifetime costs for quadriplegics, age of injury 25: $1.35 million

The purpose of this Jay's event is to bring continued awareness to Christy’s cause and provide financial support to the family.

Jay Donosky
Christy and Jay have known each other since mid-80s when he was getting his hair cut at Roger’s in Evansville, IN. Yes, the days of the Duran Duran soccer mullet. Jay’s mother continued to be Christy’s client at the time of the sledding accident. Throughout the years since leaving the tri-state area, most of the encounters have been chance in nature. He elaborated by stating, “There are certain people you meet in life that are just great people and who possess a certain aura or vibe that is full of positive energy. Christy is one of those people. My interactions with her have been limited throughout the years but I always recall a positive spirit and energy that is so rare nowadays.

Jay Donosky now lives with his wife and two boys in Flagstaff, AZ, a community full of runners, both professional and amateur. The community boasts miles of trails, world renowned coaches, and the ability to train at 7000 feet of elevation. "In many cases, an 'average' runner in Flagstaff is exceptional elsewhere. The competition at every level is tremendous." His running has been on and off over the past 2 years as he has focused on other obligations. Just days before Christy's accident, he established the goal to complete a 100 mile race as the motivation to train and get back to "running" shape.
